These are some of the most common reasons parents seek out or are referred for a psychological evaluation. By this point, you’ve already done everything you know to do to help your child and things are not getting better – or they may be getting worse.
Not knowing what is going on can be worrisome, frustrating, and scary. It also can leave you feeling helpless about what to do next as a parent. How can you make things better when you’re not even sure what’s going on?
How Testing Can Help
Evaluation and assessment are designed to give you answers to these questions about your child’s development and clarity about the concerns you have so that you can get the knowledge and insight you have been looking for.
Through a comprehensive evaluation, we can gain valuable information about your child’s strengths and weaknesses. From there, we can develop an individualized plan of treatment.
That plan, when implemented with the added support of other important people in your child’s life (e.g., doctors, teachers, counselor), can help your child get relief, be more engaged, feel better, and learn more easily.
Assessment Services
Psycho-educational evaluation for academic and learning difficulties (e.g., reading, writing, math)
ADD/ADHD Testing (e.g., inattentiveness, distractibility, fidgetiness, talkativeness)
Psychological assessment for emotional and behavioral concerns (e.g., anxiety, meltdowns, defiance)
Evaluation for accommodations for college/universities and standardized or licensing exams (e.g., SAT/ACT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, licensing boards)
Developmental evaluations (e.g., social, communication/language, or fine motor delays)
Gifted and school admission testing
STEPS IN THE PROCESS
Initial Visit
When you and your child come in for an initial visit, we will discuss your areas of concern and questions you may have, along with a thorough background. This usually lasts about an hour.
We will also provide you with several questionnaires and behavioral checklists to complete, along with teachers if warranted, to provide us with additional information about your child’s functioning.
Testing
Then your child will go through individualized testing to provide the data and information needed to give you clarity and understanding.
Depending on your specific question(s), testing can last between 4-6 hours over one to two sessions (less for younger children). Don’t worry – we are used to working with kiddos and will make sure they feel as comfortable as possible, with time for breaks as needed.
Feedback Session
After testing, we will meet again (usually within a couple of weeks of testing) for a feedback visit to go over all of the results, talk about what they mean, and where to go from here (recommendations/treatment plan).
You will receive a copy of the evaluation report within a few days, and we are happy to send to anyone else at your request.
